Reset BMW 5 Series Oil Service

How To Reset BMW 5 Series Oil Service Icon for Years 1999 through 2015:

2014-2015

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position with the vehicle off (close all doors and windows and put the vehicle in park)
  2. Press the TRIP reset button (located on the left side of instrument cluster) for about 10 seconds until the first service job appears in the display
  3. Briefly press the TRIP button again to cycle through the service items until the oil maintenance item appears
    * If reset is possible, “Reset Executable” message will appear in message center
  4. To reset, press and hold the TRIP button again for 3 seconds or until the “Execute Reset?” message appears
  5. Release the TRIP button, then press and hold the button again for another 3 seconds or until the “Reset Successful” message appears
  6. Repeat the above procedure for any other services to be reset

2010-2013

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position with the vehicle off (close all doors and windows and put the vehicle in park)
  2. Press and hold the TRIP reset button for about 10 seconds until the first service job appears in the display
  3. Use the ROCKER switch located on the turn signal/main-beam switch to select the desired maintenance item to reset (oil can indicates the oil change)
  4. To reset, press and hold the on-board computer button on the turn signal/main-beam switch until the “RESET” message appears
  5. Resetting is confirmed by pressing the same button for a slightly longer period
    * A clock is displayed during resetting
    * A check/tick is displayed after “RESET” on successful resetting
  6. Repeat the above procedure for any other services to be reset

2010-2013

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position with the vehicle off (close all doors and windows and put the vehicle in park)
  2. Press and hold the SET/RESET button for about 10 seconds until the first service job appears in the display
  3. Release the button and press it again repeatedly to select the desired maintenance item to reset (oil can indicates the oil change)
  4. To reset, press and hold the SET/RESET button again until the “OK” or “DUE” message appears
  5. Press the SET/RESET button again to display the “RESET” message
  6. Release and press the button one more time to confirm the reset
  7. Repeat the above procedure for any other services to be reset

2004-2009

  1. Turn the ignition to the ACC position with the vehicle off and your foot off of the brake (close all doors and windows and put the vehicle in park)
  2. Allow all of the warning lights to turn on and the warning tone to start beeping and press the CHECK button located on the turn signal stalk to display the date
  3. Press and hold the TRIP reset button located on the lower left part of the instrument cluster until you see the warning triangle disappear and the first service maintenance item appear and immediately release the button
  4. Press the TRIP button repeatedly to cycle through the maintenance items until the oil change icon is displayed
  5. Press and hold the TRIP button again until the “Reset?” message is displayed
  6. Release the TRIP button, then press and hold it again until the display shows “——” followed by the mileage interval and release the button
  7. Repeat the above procedure for any other services to be reset
  8. Turn the ignition to the OFF position and back on to confirm reset was successful

2000-2003

  1. With the key in the OFF position, press and hold the TRIP or S/R button (located at the left side of the instrument cluster) and turn the ignition to the ACC position
  2. Continue to hold the TRIP or S/R button until “Reset” is displayed in the message center
  3. Release the TRIP or S/R button, then press and hold it again for 5 seconds or until the “Reset” message begins to blink
  4. Release the TRIP or S/R button, then press the TRIP or S/R button once briefly to confirm reset while the message is still blinking
  5. Reset will be confirmed when the new mileage till service due is displayed

1990-2000

  1. Turn the key to the OFF position
  2. Find round diagnostic port under the hood of the vehicle and remove the cap
  3. Use a jumper wire (paper clip works really well too) to jump port numbers 7 and 19 (see diagram above)
  4. Turn the vehicle to the ON position without turning the engine on
  5. Wait 10 seconds and then remove the jumper wire with the key still in the ON position
  6. The service indicator should return to full green bars and the warning should go away

1990-2001

  1. BMW requires the use of a scan tool to reset maintenance light
